Flexform-Logo-new

Flexform is also a story about a family. Now in its third generation, Flexform was born in the furniture production district of Brianza, in northern Italy where, in the sixties, the unique global phenomenon of the Made in Italy design originated.

In that area, many small skillful artisanal workshops had been working wood and metal as well as upholstering sofas since the early twentieth century and they started intertwining with the great Italian designers who studied at the University of Architecture in Milan, which was nearby. The story of Flexform fits into this historical context. In 1959, the Galimberti brothers set up an artisanal workshop, which they called Flexform di Galimberti. They opened their first showroom on the street where they exhibited sofas and armchairs that, after World War II, ended up in the palaces of Milan, in villas overlooking Lake Como and even furnishing the foyer of the Teatro alla Scala in Milan.
Their children turned their workshop into a company and, in 1967, Flexform became a joint-stock company. Their intuition led them to make use of the collaboration with some of the greatest designers of the time, such as Joe Colombo, Asnago-Vender, Cini Boeri, Rodolfo Bonetto and many others. In those years, the company started a collaboration with the young architect Antonio Citterio; their mutual professional growth has now been on for more than forty years. The 1970’s brought on a decisive turning point in the way of conceiving the product. The company abandoned the tracing of past styles and made more and more original and contemporary products.
